1 Warm Up - 10 minutes

Early in the school year, I shared with my students a video about the power of words.  I've communicated that message in many ways over the year.  Today, I want to remind them of that concept, and help them see how their words are powerful in these last weeks of school.

Students tend to see the end of the school year as "party time" but I see it as the last chance to make an impact.  So, I want them to see their words in these last days as just as important as those at any other point in the year - in fact maybe more important because these are their last words as 7th grade students.

To help get this point across and honor Holocaust Remembrance Week we will view the video below and relate it to our lives through discussion afterward.

Lesson Planning

As mentioned, I used this video because it takes care of the message I want students to get, but also to bring out Holocaust Remembrance Week.  This is something I do regularly - try to connect our classroom to the world and even back to what we've been learning about.

While this is timely and fitting for my class given the work we did earlier this year with the Holocaust, it may not work best for your class.  There are many other videos out there that bring this lesson to light.  One is below:

2 Lesson - 25 minutes

Today we have shortened classes due to an assembly in the afternoon, so my time with students is shorter than normal.

With the time we have, I will return and review the extended response from Wednesday.  I will have scored their work by this time and will review pros and cons of the responses (see Wednesday's video for more on student work examples) with particular focus on the accurate use of word choice in general and content specific word choice- terms related to argument should be prevalent in this response. In the mini-lesson, I will show students two examples of student pieces where word choice was an issue for different reasons.

Next, I will ask students to self-assess Thursday's assignment and evaluate their own use of content specific terms in the response.

Finally , students will place it in the caddy for my review.

3 Wrap Up - 5 minutes

Next, I will ask students to self-assess Thursday's assignment and evaluate their own use of content specific terms in the response by underlining key words and notating the page.

Finally , students will place it in the caddy for my review.
