Regan Aymett LEARNING WAY ELEMENTARY, SHELBYVILLE, TN
1st Grade ELA : Unit #6 - Informational Text Features : Lesson #2

Glossary Time

Objective: SWBAT find the meaning of words in a glossary.
Standards: RI.1.5 SL.1.1
Subject(s): English / Language Arts
60 minutes
1 Hook - 10 minutes

Common Core Connection

RI1.5 is in the craft and structure standard section, so when approaching this lesson I was thinking about how authors use the glossary to present information.  Authors use different text features to share the information, and they actually do have a specific reason.  It might not be appropriate to place a definition in the middle of a book, so they have a whole section where students can look up the meaning to any key word. It's important for students to be able to notice key words, recognize when they don't know the meaning, and look up the word to find the meaning. Understanding this will mean that their comprehension of the text as a whole will improve.

Lesson Overview

The students are using the glossary in their text book, and they locate words they did not know. Then we play a game of locating words. Next, the student work with their partners to analyze a Glossary lesson activity sheet I made about the glossary.

The students work in small groups I call Peanut Butter Jelly Partners, and they Transition often. Check out my videos on both if you want.

Introductory Activity

To engage the class I ask the students to talk to their partner about what they can use a glossary to do.  This is how I assess their prior knowledge, but I am predicting this is all new to my class.

So, I then explain the lesson plan so my students understand my expectations and plan.  It keeps them at ease. Then we chant the lesson goal, "I can use a glossary."
