Objective:
SWBAT to demonstrate what they know and understand about creating and solving equations.

1 Launch -
5 minutes

**POD**

As students enter the room, they will have a seat, take out their **Problem of the Day** (POD) sheet and begin to work on the question on the SMARTboard. The POD allows students to use **MP 3** continually based on the discussions we have about the problem each day.

Today students will complete the post assessment for the unit on equations. To start class today, students will respond to brief discussion questions to get everybody thinking about what they have learned.

- Why do you check your solutions when you solve an equation?
- How do you set up and solve an equation for this situation: Lisa has twice as many apps on her iPod as Terry. Once Mark’s 18 apps are added in, they have a total of 60 apps between them. Find out the number of apps each person has on their iPod.

Connection to Prior Knowledge

The brief review before an assessment generally serves one of two purposes. It either relaxes them or it adds to frustration. The questions we worked through to review today seemed to help relax them and ensure them that they were prepared and that they had good understanding of solving equations and inequalities.

2 Explore -
30 minutes

Students will complete the post-assessment for our work on equations. After finishing the assessment, I want each student to evaluate their work. I will collect their work and then review the solutions using the SMARTboard. I then want to meet with each student, individually, to look at what they did and make decisions about any changes that could be made. I want them to understand where mistakes may have occurred and develop a plan to avoid those mistakes in the future. If a student does well, I want to ask for tips for understanding to share with other students. If doing practice problems helped, I want to know that. If group and/or partner work helped them understand, I want to know.

To end the class, as I meet with students, I want to look at the assessments with them and go through the corrections and mistakes. Having a few minutes with each student will be valuable as we go through the assessment. I can get a grasp of the thinking that each student used to answer the questions. I can help close any gaps and clear up any misunderstandings that might exist as well.

Trust and Respect

I like talking with my students after the assessments. The feedback they provide is good as I plan for future units. If there is a game we played that they didn't like, I want to know. If we did an activity that helped them understand I really need to know so we can do it again in another unit. I think it also helps build relationships with my kids because they know their opinions are important to what I do.
